Gutters are the spaces between panels. They aren't part of the border frame itself, but are defined *by* the borders. The gutter is where the reader 'fills in the gaps' and makes inferences about what happens between panels. The width of the gutter can also affect pacing – wider gutters suggest longer time jumps.
